Radio One Will Not Play The Full Version Of The Wizard Of Oz Track, Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead, Which Is Now Classed As An Anti-Thatcher Song.

Now this is completely bonkers in my point of view, OK so many have complained about the once innocent song from the classic movie, The Wizard Of Oz, being played down to the recent death of former Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher.

Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead - Anti-Thatcher Song!!!

It shows that the UK has put its emotions of her death in to a rally of one particular song and now, when we all watch the classic movie around Christmas time, when the song comes on, unless the BBC decided to edit the film over Christmas, we will all be thinking of Thatcher.

Now isn’t that a little crazy, seriously, it’s only a song at the end of the day and she was only a woman!

It has now been announced by BBC Radio 1 controller, Ben Cooper, that instead on the 51-second track only 5 seconds will be played on Sundays chart countdown, as the song is expected to be at number 3, Ben Cooper called the decision “a difficult compromise”

Speaking to Radio 1 Newsbeat, Mr Cooper said: “The decision I have made is I am not going to play it in full but that I will play a clip of it in a news environment.

“When I say a news environment, that is a newsreader telling you about the fact that this record has reached a certain place in the chart and here is a clip of that track.

Ben Cooper says the decision is a “compromise” but not a “fudge”

“It is a compromise and it is a difficult compromise to come to. You have very difficult and emotional arguments on both sides of the fence.

“Let’s not forget you also have a family that is grieving for a loved one who is yet to be buried.”

Ben Cooper has also posted up on a blog about the situation and more about his decision, you can read what he has said by Clicking Here.

“On Sunday, the Radio 1 Chart Show will contain a news item explaining why the song is in the charts during which a short clip will be played as it has been in some of our news programmes.”

The campaign has been called “tasteless” by the BBC’s director general Tony Hall, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and others, though few have called for the song to be banned outright from the airwaves. (See my comment earlier in the article to that one!)

DJ Paul Gambaccini and former director general Greg Dyke are among those who have taken the opposite position, arguing that the chart is a statistical reality that should not be editorialised.

Let’s Have Your Thoughts, Should Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead Be Played Or Not?

It’s your turn my loyal readers, share your thoughts on the debate, do you think the song should be played, if not, why not. Please let us all know your thoughts on this one.
